Y empieza la vendimia / And harvest starts

Lo siento por mis breves palabras después de tan largo tiempo, pero os podéis imaginar como voy. Y es que un año más empezamos la vendimia en agosto con la variedad Albillo Real. Con esto quiero decir que desaparezco un tiempo, y lo hago empezando por realizar la fermentación del Albillo de Zerberos Viento Zephyros 2010 y Zerberos Vino Precioso 2010. Hasta pronto y que lo probemos todos.

Sorry about saying so little after so much time, but you can imagine what a hard time I am having. One more year we start harvest in august with the Albillo Real variety. I am saying that I am going to disappear a little time , and I will start fermenting the Albillos that make Zerberos Viento Zephyros 2010 and Zerberos Vino Precioso 2010. See yas soon, and I hope we will all taste them.

Zerberos 2007 en la calle / Zerberos 2007 released

Los vinos tintos de Zerberos 2007 ven la luz. Empezó saliendo Zerberos Arena 2007 en enero, aun “crujiente”; posteriormente Zerberos ArenaPizarra 2007 en marzo, aun por mostrarse; y finalmente a finales de junio sale Zerberos Pizarra 2007, aun algo cerrado.

Que tiene de especial Zerberos 2007: la añada fue tan buena que si la hubiéramos diseñado sobre el papel, no nos hubiera salido tan bien. Maduraciones larguísimas, y con una uva de las más equilibradas que hemos tenido en los últimos años. Lo malo es que si se quiere disfrutar Zerberos 2007 en todo su esplendor hay que esperar hasta el más allá del 2015. Pero si algo tiene Zerberos de especial, es que estos vinos se pueden disfrutar desde hoy.

Zerberos 2007 reds are finally released. First of all Zerberos Arena 2007 was released in January still a bit “crunchy”; afterwards Zerberos ArenPizarra 2007 in March, still to show what it is; and finally by the end of June, Zerberos Pizarra 2007, still very closed. What is special about Zerberos 2007: the climate year was so good that if we would have designed it, it would not been so good. Very long maturities and with the most balanced grapes I have ever had in the area in the latest years. The worst part is that if you want to enjoy Zerberos 2007 at its best moment, we will have to wait longer than 2015. But if Zerberos is special for any reason, is that their wines are very enjoyable today, and you can keep them for after.

¿Quién dijo miedo? / Who is scared?

Yo tengo miedo…… . Las dos últimas semanas ha estado lloviendo de nuevo. Quien me ha visto y quien me ve, el año pasado protestando porque no llovía, y este año ……, por qué lloverá tanto?

Y es que empezó a llover justo con el comienzo de la floración en las parcelas de pizarra, y pensé “oh no, otro año con 150 gramos de producción por cepa como el 2008”, pero está cuajando todo “oh no, racimos prietos que rebotarán contra el suelo”, ya veremos. Pero sigue lloviendo: ¡Mildeuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Esperemos que Zephyros ruja por el valle del Alberche eliminando toda posibilidad de hongos.

Como veis siempre hay algo de que quejarse, y todavía nos queda el caluroso verano.

I am scared …… .It has been raining these two last weeks, again. Who would say so, last year I was crying because it did not rain, and this year ………., why does it rain so much?

The problem is that it started to rain just before the flowering season for the schist fincas, and I thought “oh no, an other year with yields of 150 grams per vine like the vintage 2008”, but the set fruit is being perfect, “oh no, bunches so tight that they will bounce if you through them to the flour”, we will see. But it is still raining: Mildeuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We hope that Zephyros starts to roar through the Alberche river valley drying all kinds of fungus.

As you can see, there is always something to complain about, and the hot summer is still to arrive.

Mira, mira que maravilla / Well, well and look how it smells

Y empieza la temporada 2010. Empieza la carrera frenética hacia la vendimia llena de obstáculos y trabajo. Hace un mes que empezó la brotación, y después de una quincena de lluvias y tiempo revuelto, nos encontramos con el sol. Con toda la lluvia caída que ha recuperado la sequía del 2009, salimos renovados y con una sanidad espectacular. De momento estamos contentos en Zerberos y en el Valle del Alberche.

And the season 2010 starts. This crazy race towards the harvest full of handicaps and lots of work. A month has past since bud break, and after fifteen days with rain and cold temperatures, the sun comes along. With all the rain that has fallen, we have recovered from last years drought, starting a new season renewed and with an incredible sanity within the vineyards. Today we are happy at Zerberos and at the Alberche River Valley.

Ya sabemos que el dios del viento Zephyros ruge por el valle del Alberche, nos permitió con su presencia, hacer un cuadro en cada una de las fincas que producen la uva, y podemos ver la versión española en You Tube:

This is how the labels of Zerberos Viento Zephyros 2008 were made. We already know that Zephyros, the god of the wind that roars through the alberche valley river, let his signature in each of the vineyards that produce this wines' grape and it became drawings for these labels. Majadahonda abre sus murallas. Majadahonda open up their walls

Éxito total de los vinos 7 Navas y Zerberos en una cata celebrada en la enoteca Divinum de la misma localidad. Los vinos gustaron por su gran personalidad y expresión varietal y dieron una buena idea de que es la región vitivinícola de Cebreros. Los vinos con más éxito fueron 7 Navas Roble y Selección y Zerberos ArenaPizarra, por su especial relación calidad-precio. Y los que más emociones provocaban fueron los vinos de gama superior, Zerberos Pizarra y Zerberos Arena, que sorprendieron por su concentración y finura.

Con esta cata esperamos contar con más amigos y cómplices que vengan a visitarnos a Cebreros y que disfruten y difundan la bondad de los vinos de la región. Gracias por asistir y gracias a Divinum por su complicidad (Soledad y Kai).

During a wine tasting celebrated in the wine shop Divinum at Majadahonda, the wines 7 Navas and Zerberos had a great success. The wines were specially apreciated because of their personality and their grape variety expresion (garnacha), and they gave to the tasters, a good idea of how the Cerberos wine region is. 7 Navas Roble and Seleccion, and Zerberos ArenaPizarra where the wines that the tasters liked most because of their quality for value. And the wines the tasters enjoyed most where Zerberos Pizarra and Zerberos Arena because of their finesse and concentration.

We hope we have made new freinds and accomplices that will come to visit us to Cebreros, enjoy our wines and the goodness of this wine region. Thanks for coming and thanks to Divinum for their help (Soledad and Kai).

Ante las murallas

Ante las murallas de Avila nos presentamos el pasado viernes 12 de febrero con la intención de que se cuente en la región con unos vinos, los de la zona de Cebreros, y en especial con Zerberos y 7 Navas. Difícil fue intentar convencerles de que los buenos vinos se deben pagar, como todas las cosas, y en especial los vinos de la zona de Cebreros, ya que son muy costosos de trabajar. Y la gran pregunta: ¿habremos abierto las murallas para conseguir que los vinos de Cebreros entren?

The 12th of Febuary we got in front of Avilas' wallsto try to make the restaurants count with the regional wines, the wines from Cebreros, and specialy Zerberos and 7 Navas. It was hard to convince them that you must pay the good wines, as everything, and over all the ones from Cebreros, because these vineyards are are very dear to work with. And the biggest question: have we opened the walls and let the wines from Cebreros get in Avila?

De vuelta / Back again

Después de una gran sequía (mental y de lluvia), volvemos a reiniciar la aventura de comunicar el día a semana de Zerberos.

After a great drought (of ideas and of rain), we restart the communication adventure with Zerberos.

Y la verdad es que hay mucho que decir, y empezaremos con el lanzamiento, en enero de un nuevo vino: Zerberos Viento Zephyros. Zephyros es un homenaje al viento que recorre y nos azota a lo largo del valle del río Alberche. Y la recuperación de una variedad autóctona, la Albillo.

There is really a lot to say, and we will start with the release, in January, of a new wine: Zerberos Viento Zephyros. This name (Zephyros) is in honor of the wind that roars through the Alberche River Valley. And this wine is also made to recover a native grape variety, the Albillo.

Un vino blanco, fermentado y criado en roble que nos dejará atónito por su personalidad. La etiqueta será un dibujo que hará próximamente el viento de Zephyros. De momento les dejo con la contraetiqueta del vino, a falta de alguna corrección.

A white wine , fermented and aged in oak that will leave us atonished with its great personality. The label will be soon sculpted by Zephyros wind. By now we will show the back label of the wine (waiting for any possible changes).

Zerberos Viento Zephyros 2008 13’5 % Alc. 750 ml.

Sauvignon Blanc + Albillo Real. Fermentado y criado en barrica de 500 litros de roble francés durante 9 meses. Dibujo realizado por el viento Zephyros, que ruge en el Valle del Rio Alberche, y se materializa el día 15 de Diciembre de cada año, con dos colores, correspondientes a cada una de los viñedos viejos de donde proviene la uva (El Sauvignon Blanc de El Quexigal en Azul y el Albillo Real de Huerto del Rey en Gris). Zerberos Viento Zephyros 2008 13’5 % Alc. 750 ml

Sauvignon Blanc & Albillo Real. Fermented and aged on the lees for nine months in 500 litre French oak barrels. This piece of art was sculpted by the bone chilling wind Zephyros, that roars throughout the Alberche River Valley, and is recreated the 15^th of December of each year, represented by the two colours that bring to mind each of the old vineyards where the grapes are harvested (Blue for the Sauvignon Blanc from El Quexigal, and Grey for the Albillo Real from Huerto del Rey). Sin lluvia. No rain

Este año todo parece ir bien, pero los que hemos estado en el campo llevamos mucho tiempo mirando hacia el cielo para ver si por nuestra zona cae algo de lluvia, porque en lo que llevamos de año nos ha llovido menos de 150 litros/m2 en Cebreros. Hay zonas semidesérticas con más lluvia. Este año que todo el mundo estaba contento, que en Cataluña se han llenado los pantanos después de años de sequía, llegamos los de la cuenca del Alto Alberche y lloramos desconsolados por la falta de lluvia. Con razón mi vino se llama Zerberos, porque estamos a puertas de tener un año infernalmente seco.

Habrá que trabajar mucho el viñedo, año seco y caluroso.

This year everything seems to work alright, but we whom are working in the vineyards, have been looking to the sky since long ago, trying to get a touch of rain, cause from November till today, we have had less than 150 littres/m2 of rain in Cebreros. There are semi desertic places around with more rain. This year everyone seemed happy. In Catalonia for instance, after years of drought, their reservoirs are full, and here in the Alberche river area, we are crying cause there is no rain around. That is one of the reasons why my wine is called Zerberos, because we are by the doors of hell of an extremely dry year.

We will have to work a lot in the vineyard, it will be a very hot and dry year.

El pasado 16 de Abril, Vinos Zerberos y 7 Navas Selección fueron presentados en una gran cata en Enoteca Barolo (Príncipe de Vergara, 211 – Madrid), donde los catadores salieron muy satisfechos del camino emprendido por estas jóvenes bodegas.

Last 16th April, Vinos Zerberos and 7 Navas Selección were introduced in a great wine tasting at Enoteca Barolo (Principe de Vergara, 211 – Madrid). The wine tasters ended the tasting very satisfied with the work of these young wineries.

En este escenario perfecto para la cata de vinos, Daniel Ramos decidió presentar su vino blanco, que todavía está en barrica, Zerberos Vino Precioso, hecho con Sauvignon Blanc y la variedad local Albillo Real. Con este vino se intenta rehacer –adaptado a los gustos de hoy-, el famoso “Vino Precioso” que llegó a su auge en la capital del reino del siglo XVII.

In this ideal place for a wine tasting, Daniel Ramos decided to present his first white wine, from a barrel simple, Zerberos Vino Precioso, made with Sauvignon Blanc and the local grape variety Albillo Real. This wine is made to remake –adapting it to now a days taste-, the famous wine made and drunk in the XVIIth century at the capital of the kindom, Madrid.

Además se cataron: 7 Navas Selección 2006, Zerberos Arena/Pizarra 2006, Zerberos Pizarra 2005 y 2006, y Zerberos Arena 2006. Con la mini vertical de Zerberos Pizarra se pudo observar que el vino del 2006 es bastante más mineral, potente y concentrado que el vino del 2005, pero que con este último los catadores se hicieron una idea de hasta donde podía llegar el 2006 a un año vista. Del resto de los vinos los catadores transmitieron su sorpresa por la personalidad y singularidad de los mismos.

We could also taste : 7 Navas Selección 2006, Zerberos Sand/Schist 2006, Zerberos Slate Schist 205 and 2006, and Zerberos Sand 2006. With the mini vertical wine tasting of Zerberos Slate Schist, the tasters observed that the wine from the vintage of 2006 is much more mineral, powerful and concentrated than 2005, but 2005 gave them a good idea of what this wine will be in a year time. The tasters transmitted their surprise because of the personality and singularity of the rest of the wines.

Presentación de los vinos de Daniel Ramos a los Sumilleres de ASA

Ayer día 10 de Marzo, Daniel Ramos junto con Rafael Mancebo, socio y amigo de Garnacha Alto Alberche, realizaron la presentación de los vinos que están realizando en la zona de Cebreros. Los vinos presentados fueron:

Yesterday, 10 th of March, Daniel Ramos and Rafael Mancebo, partner and a good friend of Garnacha Alto Alberche, introduced the wines that they are making in Cebreros. The wines that were tasted were:

· 7 Navas Roble 2007 y 7 Navas Selección 2006. Ambos vinos se mostraron muy bien, mostrando y cambiando de aromas durante la hora larga que estuvieron en la copa, de fruta a especias e incluso aromas a hongos. Los sumilleres que lo degustaron coincidieron en la mejoría de los vinos de Garnacha de la zona cuando se les daba una crianza en madera para redondear sus taninos. Se apreció mucho la relación calidad–precio de estos dos vinos, sensibilizándose con una recuperación de los viñedos de la zona como propósito de de futuro de Garnacha Alto Alberche.

· Zerberos Arena, Zerberos Pizarra y Zerberos Arena-Pizarra. Todos los vinos catados de Zerberos fueron de la vendimia del 2006. Primero se cató Arena- Pizarra, vino que siguiendo como es, se mostró potente y rico. Los dos vinos de pago, Pizarra y Arena, se mostraron como se esperaba, elegantes y concentrados. De los dos gustó más el descaro con el que se mostró el Zerberos Arena, supeditando el Zerberos Pizarra más como vino de guarda para poder disfrutarlo en unos añitos. Lo que más molestó a los catadores fue la escasa producción que hubo en el 2006 de estos vinos ya que limitará mucho su difusión.

· 7 Navas Roble 2007 and 7 Navas Selección 2006. Both wines showed their best, changing their aromas from fruit to spices and aromas of mushroom, during more than an hour that the wine was in the cup. The sommeliers of the wine tasting agreed that the Garnacha wines from this region improve when they age in oak, because they make a smoother and richer wine. The value for money of these two wines were very well appreciated by the tasters, and they were also sensible with our mensaje of recuperation of the vineyards of the surroundings.

· Zerberos Sand, Zerberos Slate and Zerberos Sand/Slate. All the Zerberos wines tasted were the new release of 2006 vintage. The first wine to be tasted was the Sand/Slate. This wine as usual showed up beautiful and out standing. The two pago wines Slate and Sand showed up as it was expected, elegant and concentrated, stunning. Of these two wines the tasters appreciated most, the nerve of the Zerberos Sand, recognising that Zerberos Slate will be a wine that will age beautifully. What the tasters did not like much was hearing the limited quantities of wines that are being released.

Así pues, disfrutamos de una gran tarde con los sumilleres de Ávila, y esperamos que nuestro mensaje sobre la introducción de los vinos de Ávila en la región como algo necesario haya calado. Las próximas catas de presentación de la nueva añada se realizarán el día 24 de este mes, durante la feria de Ávila, y el día 16 de Abril en Enoteca Barolo en Madrid.

So we enjoyed a great afternoon with the someliers of Avila, and we hope that our mensaje that the introduction of the wines from Avila in the region of Avila is vital, has been heard. The new winetastes of the 2006 vintage release will take place the 24th of March during the Avila Feria, and the 16th of April at Enoteca Barolo at Madrid.

El pasado 1 de Marzo de 2009 Daniel Ramos participó con Esteban Cabezas como pareja de cata del 2º concurso de cata por parejas de Vila Viniteca, quedando finalistas.

The past 1st of March of 2009 Daniel Ramos and Esteban Cabezas participated as wine tasting pair in the 2º Vila Viniteca wine tasting prize, ending up as finalist.

De las 85 parejas incritas se presentaron 83 de toda España. La fase clasificatoria, constaba de 7 vinos internacionales, de los cuales cada pareja tenía que averiguar el país de origen de cada vino, su zona de producción, su denominación de origen, su añada, variedades, bodega de producción y la marca. De esta manera tan solo 10 de las 85 parejas que concursaban podían pasar a la final. Los vinos de la fase clasificatoria fueron:

1.- Bollinger Grande Année 1999. AOC Champagne – Francia

2.- Belondrade y Lurton 2007. DO Rueda – España

3.- Hermann Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese 2004. Nahe – Alemania

4.- Descendientes de J. Palacios Corullón 2001. DO Bierzo – España

5.- Château Léoville Las Cases 1999. AOC Saint-Julien – Francia

6.- Flor de Pingus 2006. DO Ribera del Duero – España

7.- Lustau Solera Gran Reserva Oloroso “Emperatriz Eugenia”

De todos estos vinos, el más difícil de averiguar fue sin duda el Corullón de Ricardo Perez Palacios.

The wine tasting prize started with 85 pairs registered of which 83 entered from all around Spain. The clasification stage was a tasting of 7 wines where each pair of wine tasters had to answer the country origine of the wine, its area, its DO, AOC, ..., its vintage, its varieties, the winery of production and its brand. In this way only 10 of the 85 pairs ended up in the finals. The wines that were tasted in the clasification stage were:

2.- Belondrade y Lurton 2007. DO Rueda – Spain

3.- Hermann Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese 2004. Nahe – Germany

From all of these wines, the most dificult, with no doughts, was Crullón made by Ricardo Perez Palacios.

La cata de la Gran Final tuvo lugar por la tarde, y se cataron los vinos más icónicos, que fueron:

2.- Guitián Godello 2007. DO Valdeorras – España

3.- Coulée de Serrant 2005. AOC Coulée de Serrant – Francia

De estos vinos, el Harlan se mostró el más complicado, por lo que casi nadie consiguió ubicarlo, ni siquiera acertar el pais de origen.

The tasting of the Finals took place during the afternoon, and we tasted these wines:
